The Family Trade by Charles Stross

[openbook booknumber=”1857236262″]

The Family Trade is the first novel of a six series set about a woman, Miriam, who finds out she can travel between worlds. The other world feels like a typical fantasy world, and I almost set the book down. I haven’t been disappointed by Stross, so I kept reading. It has a bit of the “Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” feel. Stross pulls it off well.

I really enjoyed this set.

The entire novel of is an inversion of a typical Culture novel, and it’s one of my favorites.

I like everything I’ve read by Iain M. Banks. This is a Culture novel, and I rank it near the middle of his Culture stuff.

The People of Sparks by Jeanne DuPrau

I didn’t like this book as much as I liked The City of Ember. I often find that when authors have a series that makes them fairly famous, the initial novel is much better than the others.

The City of Ember by Jeanne Deprau

I really liked The City of Ember. I enjoyed it enough I kept reading until the end of the series. Regardless of the disparaging remarks I’ll make about those, this book is good on its own.

The System of the World by Neal Stephenson

Finally, the Baroque Cycle concludes. As the third part of a fairly long trilogy, this is only recommended if you’re willing to put the time in to read Cryptonomicon, plus the other two Baroque Cycle books. However, if that’s your thing, this does a really good job of wrapping things up.

inbox_count tells you how many email messages are in your inbox.

Today, I read a blog post where Thomas said he was graphing the numbers of messages in his Evolution mailbox to track himself and his progress at keeping his inbox empty.

I wrote and released a Python script that does the same for IMAP servers, called inbox_count.

It’s located at http://feelslikeburning.com/projects/inbox_count/.

Enjoy!

Ender in Exile by Orson Scott Card

I didn’t particularly enjoy Ender in Exile. While I enjoyed Ender’s Game, and I enjoyed the first few Ender’s Shadow series books immensely, his later stuff isn’t doing it for me.
